More Info

What is Pumice? Pumice is a rock froth formed by the extreme puffing up of a liquid lava by Expanding gases liberated from solution in the lava prior to and during solidification.

Where does pumice come from? The pumice we offer originates from volcanoes in the Lesser Antilles of the Southern Caribbean. During volcanic eruptions, pumice is expelled either directly into the sea or onto the slopes, and then gradually washed into the Caribbean, where it may float for months driven by wind and ocean currents throughout the Caribbean and beyond.

How did it get its present shape? Crude pumice as it is expelled during volcanic activity is abraded by coming into contact with harder materials and by rolling on the beaches onto which it is finally thrown. Most will eventually be ground into powder and diappear on the ocean floor.

Where do we find pumice stones? A few pumice pieces will survive this arduous journey and by a combination of wind, ocean currents and wave action will arrive at certain scattered beaches where they are gathered and brought to you.
